Begal: A Modern Display Font for Digital Branding

I was working on a redesign for a boutique online store that sells handmade stationery and greeting cards. The goal was to create a brand identity that felt both creative and trustworthy. As I explored font options, Begal stood out immediately. It’s an all caps display font with a clean, modern look that has just the right amount of trendiness without feeling overdone.

What caught my attention first was how well Begal balanced style and readability. It’s not too ornate or busy, which is important when designing for a digital audience that skims content quickly. I tested it in the hero section of the homepage, placing it over a subtle background image of handcrafted paper. The contrast worked beautifully, and the text remained legible even from a distance.

Begal’s personality is confident but not overwhelming. It has a slightly geometric feel with rounded edges, giving it a friendly yet professional tone. This made it ideal for the brand’s voice—creative but approachable. I used it for headlines, call-to-action buttons, and promotional banners throughout the site. It added a consistent visual thread that helped reinforce the brand’s identity across different sections.

One of the key considerations when choosing a display font like Begal is how it affects readability. On mobile screens, where space is limited, I made sure to keep the text size large enough so that it didn’t get lost against the background. I also experimented with spacing between letters to ensure the words were easy to scan. For smaller elements like buttons, I paired Begal with a simpler sans serif font to maintain clarity and avoid visual fatigue.

Font pairing is always a delicate balance. In this project, I paired Begal with a clean sans serif typeface for body copy. This combination allowed the display font to shine as a focal point while keeping the rest of the content easy to read. It’s a common practice in web design to use a decorative font for headings and a more neutral font for body text. This approach helps guide the user’s eye and improves overall readability.

When using Begal in a landing page or product showcase, I found that it worked best for short phrases and bold statements. It wasn’t suitable for long paragraphs or dense blocks of text, which makes sense for a display font. Instead, I reserved it for titles, taglines, and feature highlights. This ensured that the font was used purposefully and didn’t detract from the user experience.

Another thing I checked before finalizing the font choice was its availability and licensing. Begal comes with several styles and weights, which gave me flexibility in how I used it across the site. The webfont format was easy to implement, and the file sizes were optimized for fast loading. This is crucial for maintaining performance, especially on pages with multiple fonts or complex layouts.

I also considered how Begal would look in different color schemes and backgrounds. It performed well on both light and dark themes, which was important since the website had a section with a dark mode option. The font’s contrast was strong enough to remain visible without needing additional styling. This adaptability made it a versatile choice for various design scenarios.

For the blog section of the site, I used Begal in the headers of each post. It helped create a visual hierarchy that made the content easier to navigate. Readers could quickly identify the main topics and move through the articles with ease. This kind of structure supports better scanning behavior, which is essential for engaging users who are looking for specific information.

In the course sales section, Begal was used for the headline and pricing details. Its bold presence helped draw attention to the most important elements of the page. I also used it sparingly in promotional banners to avoid cluttering the layout. The result was a clean, focused design that encouraged action without overwhelming the user.

Overall, Begal proved to be a great addition to the project. It brought a fresh, modern energy to the brand while maintaining professionalism and readability. Whether you're designing a portfolio site, a product landing page, or a coaching website, Begal can help elevate your typography and create a more polished online brand experience.
